A Somewhat "Modern" Christmas Carol
December 12, 2004

In Garrett DeGraff's 21st century update of Dickens' classic tale,
Ebeneza Scrooge is a high-rise woman in a power-broker suit. Usury is
now a commonplace business principle, so Scrooge has expanded her
empire to include real estate, casinos and media. No more quill pens
and ledgers - now it's laptop computers and cell phones. The arrival
of each ghost is presaged by a chirp from the napping Ebeneza's cell
phone. Tiny Tim is in chemotherapy, the United Way hopes for an ounce
of compassion, and the realistic looking roast chicken is a paper bag
(low in carbs, high in fiber). |

Once again, writer-director Garrett DeGraff and musical director
Laura Sharp, abetted by set designer Alison Stonbely have brought out
the best in our budding thespians. And once again, come Christmas
morning, a miser comes to her senses.
