2004 LAMAR LECTURER
Dr. Virginia Ramey Mollenkott

Author of hundreds of articles and thirteen books, including The Divine Feminine: Bibilical Images of God as Femal; Godding: Human Responsibility and the Bible; and Sensuous Spirituality: Out from Fundamentalism.

Dr. Mollenkott earned her BA at Bob Jones University, her MA. at Temple University, and her Ph.D. at New York University.

Her public lecture entitled "There Be No Monsters Here: Correcting Our Sex and Gender Maps" was held at 4:00 pm Saturday, May 8th in First Presbyterian's Assembly Hall, while nearby Washington Park teemed with Tulip Festival fanciers.

While politicians and lawyers grapple with the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution, we were reminded of the New Testament prescription "In Christ there is no Jew or Greek, no slave or free, no male or female." (Galatians 3:28)

The following Sunday morning, we learned more than we wished to know about surgical interventions with newborns who fail to meet stereotypical norms of sexual identity. We suspect God also hates to be typecast as a bearded white male (on many counts).

Dr. Mollenkott taught college literature and writing for 44 years and is now Professor Emeritus at the William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ.
