Good Friday Vespers
Friday, April 9th, the First Presbyterian Church Chancel Choir and
Orchestra presents Haydn's Seven Last Words of Christ, Victor
Klimash conducting. Organist Nancy Frank, Soprano Deborah Rocco,
Alto Fiona Lewis and Bass Alan Kirk will be joined by
guest artist Tenor Brian Bailey for what should truly be a
moving service. |
 |
The program will also feature Morten Lauridsen's choral work O
Nata Lux, and Alan Shulman's Threnody for strings.
Shulman's work is of local interest, being a composition by the late
father of Jay Shulman, our principal cellist.
|
Alan Shulman (1915-2002) enjoyed a long career as cellist and
composer, from his teenage years (as a union musician in New York
City), followed by studies at the Peabody Conservatory and Julliard.
Then on to performances with the Kreiner String Quartet and Haydn
Quarter, work with Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
Shulman's efforts were not limited to classical music. He
composed/arranged for such notables as Benny Goodman, Frank Sinatra,
Ella Fitzgerald, Steve Allen and Nat King Cole.
Threnody ("a song or hymn of mourning composed or
performed as a memorial to a dead person") premiered on NBC in
1950. A half-century later, we are honored to bring this musical
offering to our sanctuary. |
