DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Join the Mission Committee for Adult Education in January - when we explore the problem of domestic violence in our community. Come to our three Sunday morning programs (9:30 am) for questions and answers.

What is it? Domestic violence is abuse (physical, emotional, economic, sexual or psychological) by a person in close relationship with the abused (spouse, friend, housemate, relative, boyfriend/girlfriend, former lover). The common link among all types of domestic violence is the abuser's need to dominate and control the abused.

January 8 - Kathy McGee, Director of Equinox Domestic Violence Shelter

Kathy and a guest will discuss what it is like to experience domestic voiolence, and seek a way out - to move on and sustain a violence-free life.

January 18 - Rev. Deb Jameson,
FOCUS Community Minister

Our FOCUS minister will lead us as we ask:

"What can we learn from the Bible about domestic violence - and how can we respond to it, as individuals and as a faith community?

January 22 - Speaker from School of Social Welfare, University at Albany

Professor Bonnie Carlson from the School of Social Welfare will help us answer the questions:

  • What are the reasons domestic violence occurs?

  • How does it affect the abused, the family, children, and the community?
  • What can be done to break the cycle of violence and encourage healing and wholeness for abusers and the abused?
